Peter Gordon Thompson - Contemporary Furniture Maker

‘an incredible love for designing and building chairs and stools’

Background

Peter’s love for working with wood was sparked in the early 1980ies when he created his first piece as a student at the College of the Atlantic at Bar Harbor, Maine. He has since filled homes – including his own – with his functional art - creations with unique lines inspired by his intense love for Maine’s natural beauty and greatly influenced by the various African and European cultures in which he grew up as the son of an American diplomat.

Peter established his own business after gaining experience through working with two of the most accomplished furniture makers on the East Coast. Before long his work had been recognised by his peers and collectors from California to Rhode Island. His pieces have been selected for some of the most prestigious exhibitions, shows and publications.

Awards and publications include:

  • Marc Harrison Award, Best in Show for Marketing Excellence (2007)
  • Outstanding Craftsmanship Award, Maine Wood Biennial Exhibition (2008)
  • Showcase Suil Togolach Chair, Maine Wood Biennial Exhibition (2010)
  • “Furniture 102 Contemporary Designs”, write-up and images of Walton NE Side Chair and Lizanne Arm Chair, Taunton Press (2009)
  • “Fine Woodworking Design Book Eight, Original Furniture from the World’s Finest craftsmen”, write-up and images of Walton NE Side Chair (double page spread) and main image for the Seating Section of Lizanne Arm Chair, Taunton Press (2009)

Peter’s strength lies in assembling his furniture primarily using traditional mortise and wedged or pinned tenon joinery, thereby guaranteeing not only the perfect balance between beauty and comfort, but also its longevity. It can be passed on from generation to generation. Moreover, Peter’s creations can be stand-alone works of art highlighting a prestigious place at home or in an office environment, or form part of an imaginative dining or meeting room setting.

Through close collaboration Peter responds to his customers’ imaginative thoughts and ideas by creating unique and fitting works of art.
